We’re excited to have a new installation from local artist Dave Moore up on the Downtown Mall! As scores of passersby watched, Dave installed the site-specific panels of canvas on Friday afternoon. Check out photos of the installation process here.
As you might notice, one of the panels is also an homage to Motherwell’s Elegy to the Spanish Republic series. Also, if you like what you see, be sure to check out Dave’s new exhibit in Richmond at Pibby’s Bicycle & Skate in May.
Though you might not have been able to tell, we’ve been busy recently! Reko’s kangaroos and Salena’s buzzard came out of the storefronts they were inhabiting. Though we’re a little disappointed to walk down the mall without either of these eye-catching installations, we’re also psyched that both spaces are now successfully being rented by new tenants.
In other news, we’re installing new work by local artist Dave Moore downtown today at 101 East Market Street. Stop by around noon to watch the process and say hello! More updates and images to come…
Finally, we’re thrilled to be partnering with The Bridge PAI and The IX Complex to launch a mural design competition as part of the Charlottesville Mural Project. Local community members as well as artists around the world are invited to submit their design ideas for a mural that will be placed on a large wall facing Monticello Avenue in Downtown Charlottesville. Submission deadline is June 1. For more details, click here.
As part of New City Arts Initiative’s ongoing Kettle & Cork reading series, a handful of people met this morning at Cafe Cubano to discuss public art and its potential for community revitalization. It was a great chance to mull over some of the details of CommonPlace Arts, and consider some of the potential outgrowths of the project in the future.
In the meantime, I’m excited to announce that we’ll be installing our inaugural windows tomorrow. The locations and artists are still a secret, but keep an eye out for details and photos!
Many thanks to longtime CommonPlace Arts supporter Morgan Perkins for getting the project a healthy dose of news coverage! In case you missed it, NewsPlex ran a nice piece about us on Tuesday, titled “New Art Project Cleans Up Window Displays”. You might notice that some details seem to be missing… but hey, publicity is publicity. We’re just happy that the idea is spreading like wildfire and folks are getting involved!
In case you missed it, CommonPlace Arts got a nice mention in the C-Ville Weekly’s Feedback blog. Thanks, Andrew!
And, in addition to that, plans are moving along nicely… I’m in the process of meeting with local realtors about spaces that can be used for installations. If you know of anyone with an empty storefront downtown, please send them my way!
Finally, when you’re downtown this weekend, I hope you notice all those vacant windows and try to imagine the possibilities!
Yesterday I presented the CommonPlace Arts proposal to the Downtown Business Association of Charlottesville and got a full vote of support! Guess it’s time to get things rolling… Next step is to talk to specific property owners about spaces we can use.
Stay tuned for updates as I go about identifying properties and artists to incorporate into the project. Let me know if you’re interested in getting involved and be sure to follow @commonplacearts on Twitter!
